Stinky Laundry

I have been using 7th Generation laundry detergent for the past year and haven't had any complaints until recently. I have some laundry that just will not become unstinky. The problem is, I don't know how they got stinky in the first place. I especially notice it with my pajama tops. One was just AWFUL so I washed it again. I even tossed it to my roommate (a BOY!) and he recoiled in disgust.

So today I'm going to the store and buying me some Tide. I'll get liquid, of course, so that it's phosphate free. I just feel horrid about it but I just cannot go through life wondering if I'm stinky and have just gotten used to it. I'll start with a small bottle just in case it's not the 7th Generation's fault.

In case you're wondering what kind of stink it is...it smells like they've been in a box for a really long time but stronger and worse.

I don't know what's in the 7th Generation product, but I have noticed that using pure soap in the laundry powder I make at home over time also makes our clothes a bit "whiffy" and lines the inside of my washing machine drum, so I am also guilty of buying the "regular" stuff occaisonally while I look for an alternative to freshen up our clothes... I'm interested in hearing what other people do about it. Cheers.

Oh Mumma, I'm so glad to hear that! I really don't want to think that I created that smell all on my own! : )

Try METHOD detergent. It is better for the enviroment than some others out there. I haven't found any stinky clothes with use and I have been using it for over a year. I buy mine at Target.

You could also clean your machine. A service guy recommended this method to me, and yes I know it's using a not-so-friendly product but I do it only once every 3-6 months. Run a full cycle with nothing in the washer, using hot water and Cascade dishwasher detergent instead of laundry soap. It's supposed to clean out all the built up gunk. Oh, and always use vinegar in your rinse cycle to help break up the soap scum (from your machine and clothes).

I've had complaints too from my partner, though its only his clothes that smell and very rarely mine, even though they all go in the wash together. I think its the t-shirt fabric. We use Ecover usually but are experimenting with other environmentally friendly products to try to reduce the smell. The idea of cleaning out the washing machine makes sense. I might try that.
